READ Center

At the Reading, Writing, and Development (READ) Center student’s receive help with homework, reading, and preparing for the Primary School Exam (PSE). A concerned parent in the village, Nadine Moore, had the idea to begin the after school center. She says that “the kids [in Gales Point] need to take education seriously”.

$5 pays for a tutoring session at the READ Center.
We estimate that we will need 10 hours per student so with 16 students,
we will need 160 $5 donations to make sure these kids are
receiving the extra help they need outside of school.

Please join Hawksbill Hope in this effort! Your contribution will make an impact on the Gales Point Community! Whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support!!

The need for the READ Center

A study conducted by Belizean Government and outside observers found up to one-third of students dropped out of school before they turned 14. The READ Center intends to make sure the children of Gales Point do not become part of that statistic. The primary mission of the READ Center is to better prepare students for the Primary School Examination (PSE). The PSE takes place when a student finishes primary school at 12 years old. The results of this exam are integral in determining the student’s opportunity to advance their education at a secondary school. Students who cannot pass the test cannot move on to middle school or continue with their education.

The concerned parents in Gales Point built the READ Center for their children to go to after school to receive homework and reading help in preparation for this exam. The READ Center provides additional services and materials that students may not have access to in their own homes. According to Nadine Moore, a parent in Gales Point, students at the Government School often do poorly on the PSE because they don’t have all of the materials to aid them in thoroughly grasping the content they are being taught.

The Primary School Examination:

The Primary School Examination is based on four main subjects: Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. Many schools begin preparing their students in grades 5th and 6th, but some schools begin as early as preschool. The results of this examination are a primary factor in getting accepted into secondary schools so students aim to get at least a 50% or higher. Depending on where you come from, children have advantages over one another due to access to materials and qualified teachers.
